Hi all i tagged along today with another spark on a cu change and came across this http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/zz25/campbellj_01/DSC00122.jpg

It seems that it was feeding power to the garage (socket and lights) which is quite worying as the power was taken from else where in the house.

When it came to changing to cu found that the earthing and neutral bars were actualy broken off and only held seperated by the actual conductors.

What is more is that the customer moved in yesterday and were givin a home owners pack and inspections on the gas and electrics were done suposetly. Surely this wouldve been picked up.

Coments and input welcomed

The hips pack is not a full survey or test of the electrical installation.

Some people will claim that the electrics have been passed, normally by an unqualified survayer. The gas would have had to be a proper Gas Safe certificate and at this time is the only legal requirement, but only when asked for, as most houses sold do not have one of them either.

Full testing is the only way to find faults on an installation, sadly although part p is now required for all notifiable jobs in the domestic area, the scheme providers and the government do very little to enforce it, and that is why people get away with shoddy, uncontrolled, and untested work.

At least the photo's you have uploaded show some kind of housing was used for an electrical connections, I have seen many just twisted together then taped up.

Yep, i thought that was quite a novel way to enclose the connections. Why cant I think of cheap ways like that to get the job done instead of paying out for adaptable boxes lol!

Yes the masterfull art of the cowboy. Started a new job today complete refurb unfortunately i didnt have my phone handy to take pics but imagine 9 junction boxes on top of a consumer unit. The cu was replaced after a previouse fire in the old one but none of the wiring was replaced i think they just cut them to were the insulation wasnt melted and must've used the junction boxes to conect fly leads to the cu. Wil try upload a few pics tomorow.
