Hey all,

Just thought id let you know my possible opportunity.

Ive been offered a job for a company called KBR, They employ contractors in Iraq and Afghan.

At the moment im unemployed ... And also this is good way to make good decent money and experience as i'm only 21 years old.

Im going to Houston, texas (this is where Kbr are based) For 10 days unpaid processing (Drug test's - Medical etc) And if I pass this ill be flown to Dubai and then to Irag for 7days electrical training and then on to my given base to serve as a 'Journey man'

Does any one know of any Sparks out there now?

Your comments would be appreciated.

Well that sounds like a good opportunity for a young-un like you to get out and see a bit of the world.. & earn a bit of money... nice oneApplaud Smiley:D

Hope it all goes well!

Ive spoken to people who have worked for them yes.

Ive also joined indeed.com/forum, Spoken to wives etc whos husbands are out there and electricians who are working for them. Every thing seems okay as long as you can hack the long hours.

Like any contractor /Company tho, Theres good and bad stories from male and female..

I suppose I can always come home if its not what I expect..

KBR are an offshoot of one of the biggest companies in the world.

They are owned by Halliburton (**** Cheneys company), generally they do the work in all the reconstruction work in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Watch out for the tax situation, get some advice from an accountant as this will depend on your rota of leave and work.

Not worked in Iraq or Afghanistan but know folk who have and they said its not as scary as they make out now.

Not suprised what I have heard you don't get off the base your working on to see or get in to any trouble.

A guy I know is out in Iraq at the moment with KBR, I haven't spoken to him directly since he went but yes, he did the induction/processing in Texas then a short training period (inspection and testing I think).

KBR are a well respected international constrution company, I met a guy in Qatar a few weeks ago who works for them in the Middle East.

If I were your age and didn't have kids I would jump at the chance but I believe you only get to come homw for 30 days in the first year so although you will avoid tax you may miss your family.

yes your correct 30 days of the year. 4months on 2 weeks off.

seven days a week, 12 hour shifts. Got a friend to travel with to Houston on the 9th of feb for there 'processing' (drug testing, Physical testing etc. 10 days max) Then off to Iraq to train for 7days before getting shifted to your selected base, As I understand.

It aint going to be an easy ride but im just going to see how it goes.

Hello Pickburn, If you are sure it's for you and keen to give it your best shot, however you look at it, it is experience and employment, which cannot be disregarded in the current economic climate. All the best with it and assuming things work out, it will be really good if you can still get Internet access and update up the forum on how things are going.

Doc H.

Yea come on Oilbedammed, how bad is Nigeria?
Rigs getting shot up, folk getting kidnapped and held for money off of the oil company, disgusting food, locals who are completely off their nut and would do you in for a fiver, customs officials fining you dollars for whatever reason the want.

There are worse stories but not really the place to be posting them.

But apart from that is it ok? lol!

Will certainly think twice before applying for a job out there I think.

KBr is the chemical forumla for potassium bomide - a salt used for the treatment of epilepsy
KBR (pronounced K Bar) is the name given to the USMC fighting knife, has a knuckle duster handle.
