Don't pick it up on the phone or IPAD though!

my regs are in van too but i was always under impression walls and ceilings were included in the <50mm rule. Cables in notchs on the joists would need to be RCD protected, but that would also mean all cables simply laying above a ceiling, or not through holes in the joists and strung tight like a bow would need to be protected too?

You are missing the point completely. There are no allowed zones in the floor so my statement stands. Go read 522.6.6.

If you are not allowed to install cables in a floor what does 522.6.4 and 522.6.5 apply to? Seems pointless having a reg thats not allowed. BTW, what reg prohibits cables being buried in the floor? 522.6.5 seems to me to give the conditions under which cables are permitted to be buried within the structure of a floor.

Again, missing the point. Safe Zones are defined in 522.6.6 and that ONLY applies to Walls and Partitions. There are NO Safe Zones for Floors or Ceilings.

So then Ian, what protection do we give cables that are out of the safe zones??Personally I'd say 522.6.4 is the more appropriate reg, or could we apply 522.8.10?? ;)
Not sure how else to say this but THERE ARE NO SAFE ZONES ON FLOORS!!!!

Noz never mentioned floors. You are only reading what you want.

How do you get cables to a garage or garden shed? Or what about lights,? The ceiling of 1 room is the floor of another, and that could be a flat above, probably concrete units too!

He did mention floors when quoting floor regs. O would suggest you go read the regs steptoe as you seem to have forgotten them.

well at least now you are realising there are regs that cover cables in floors,

go and read them,

sidewinder, noz and myself, among others, have told you where to find them, 522.6.4 & 522.6.5 and others all concern cables in floors.

OMG. I never said there wasn't just that the 50mm and the safe zones do not apply to concrete floors.

IAN,,

I think we understand that only walls have safe zones,, ceiling voids and floors don't!

Ceiling and floor voids have their own rules!

Now solid floors dont have any zones so we have to look at other regs to understand any protection that they need..

Don't get fixated on the fact that I and maybe others are saying that they are out of zones,,, they are because the floor doesnt have any!

If there are no zones then something can not be out of zones. That basic logic. I would hope a professional would get the correct description.
