Hello, I will very soon be having a static caravan put on farmland for family, I am wondering if my answer is a standard one or weather I will need a qualified electrician to come and survey for me.

The static is mainly gas, I.e combi boiler, front room fire, and oven. The electric will be to power, lights, fridge freezer, washing machine and dryer, microwave and kettle, light and tv(s) etc..

Any information would be appreciated even if it just don't be dumb get someone out.

Hello AB,

there are many questions so the answer is not a straight forward yes or no.

how far from the supply is the caravan?
what type of supply is present?
how many family members will be living in it?
what is the supply rating available? Is it a separate supply or is it a supply in use by your house?

aside from the appliances you’ve mentioned is there an electric shower? Electric heating appliances?

ideally in this situation I’d advise an assessment from a local spark prior to any connection being made. The last thing you need is to cause an overload issue that will effect not only the caravan but also the existing property.

For starters, to calculate what size of cable is needed to supply your proposed caravan you will need to know..

The total expected load at the caravan...

The distance from the caravan to the source of supply..

realistically this is not a DIY rough guess to see if it works option...

So the safest and cheapest solution is to get it properly surveyed and designed so you don't end up with a cheap unsatisfactory solution..

Welcome to the mad house forum.  Guinness

Okay so we are just less than 60 meters from the supply which will be connected from mains, the in existence supply only powers the house its an underground 400mm armoured power cable not long back installed for the sheer size of the house, in the static 5 will reside, 2 toddlers and a teenager plus me and the wife, the cooker and shower are gas appliances, the heaviest load the static will take is an A rated washer and dryer, fridge freezer, several chargers, kettle, 2 tvs and 2 consoles, plus several lights and lamps, this would be everything on at once which I can not see happening, but have to be safe that's the heaviest load, I take it this is not something I can just throw in myself? my naivety made me think if I put a completly unneeded huge cable in it, itwould be alright lol I will call the sparky 😁 thankyou for the quick responses guys.

🤣🤣 Apologies I should of proof read it properly I tapped 0 twice oops, I've called the sparky he is going to come have a look 😁

I would think you will need at least a 32A supply to cope with dryer and washing machine being on, then someone switching on the kettle. I take it you are living in the van temporarily whilst doing work to the house?
