My old man has been on one of these speed awareness courses & was told that these are now in operation for testing on roads into Scotland. They will be rolled out across the country by end of 2013 according to the Traffic plod that was running the course

The set-up uses a combination of high-speed cameras and lasers to accurately measure the depth of each tyre groove, and sounds a warning if the central 75 per cent of the tyre has less than 1.6mm of tread.

that could be fun - especially since trucks can have 1mm of tread...

Actually I am very much in favour of this. I'd never let tyres get so low. Bald tyres are dangerous.

I was once run off the A1(M) by an uninsured, untaxed banger. No sympathy here. The fines they give these people need to be the few hundred PLUS the cost of the insurance.

Getting illegal cars off the road can only be a good thing.

I agree patch. problem is most motors such as those you had the unfortunate meeting with, are usually driven by "I don't pay for sod all & claim my benefits" type people, so the tread camera thing & subsequent fines will not be paid & cars will not be removed (unless stopped at a vcp).

more hassle, totally agree about the uninsured. Sometimes think we should have insurance/ MOT discs on vehicles rather than tax discs, do away with road tax - there's enough tax on fuel already - and sack a whole government department. I've always felt the more you use the roads the more fuel duty you pay anyway, so why do we need vehicle licence?

I have always wondered why parking ticket officers dont do random checks on tyres.

My wonder is when will reg recognition come in on speed cameras that will know that it is a van you are driving to adjust the speed limit accordingly

I wish i could get a police registered camera and get £50 for every person i photograph using a phone while driving. I would earn a mint.

Last thing, the south Africans have a system were 3rd party insurance is in with the price of the fuel, so there are no uninsured drivers.

Not mine, but you do see some tyres in a right state which should not be on the road, but still, why come out with all this fancy camera technology when traffic wardens can do the job for no extra cost.

traffic wardens (most council areas anyway) dont have any legal powers to do anything about it, other than phone the real police. and by the time they arrive, the owner of the vehicle has probably had time to finish their shopping, walk the dog, return to vehicle and drive away...

They would just take photographs and take readings or something maybe even get special permission to order a clamp to be put on the car by clampers as the car would not be deemed road worthy anyway.

you dont need to be giving them any more work to do. there should be more police on the roads. next you will be wanting the local traffic warden to attent a robbery, since there isnt any police around?

your getting silly now ............the cars we are talking about are parked cars and that is what traffic wardens deal with isn't it now.

The traffic wardens in my area are employed by the council. They are right Hitlers. I personally wouldn't want them to have any more power.

Traffic wardens are local authority. Maybe not a bad job for a traffic policemen on quiet days - park up at a big supermarket/shopping centre and have a walk about.

Could easily respond to urgent calls and could look at a lot of cars in very little time.

what about motorbikes?

they have less tread and in a totally different pattern to a car,

and as has been said, unless there is actually standing water they work much better with very little or no tread,

most sports tyres have NO grove whatsoever over probably 80% of the centre of the tyre which is the bit in contact with the road in a straight line.
