Hi all!

Ive not been on for a while, but just got back from sunny Afghanistan, for the last time thankfully!!

My question is Im about to start a domestic electrician course, giving me EAL DEI incorperating part p. I also intend to do 2391 before I leave the army in September. Im a little confused as to what, with these Qualifications can I actually do?

Cheers

Ok I'll take a shot at this, but I stand to be corected.

EAL, DEI, never heard of them

Part P is a building reg not a qulification

2391 is a good C&G cert, but the pass rate is low, basically meant for time served sparks that want get further quils

Rod,

the main question has to be is what other formal training do you have in the electrical field..

I left the MOD (RAF civvy) after 17years with an HNC in electrical engineering and with all that time repairing electrical, electronic and mechanical instrumentation so I had a really good understanding and good underpinning knowledge of electrics..

when I left I did the regs course (was 2381 back then) and my 2391 and I have since done the update course (2382-20 IIRC) and I went straight into self employment,, doing small jobs to begin with and slowly expanding the types of work that I do all the time after doing a lot of research (but only when I feel confident)

BTW.. I have not done an EAL course and I am a NICEIC domestic installer at the moment,,, right now I'm in the process of transfering to the Approved Contractor scheme;)

doing an EAL will not allow you to carry out Part P work without notifying your LABC and paying their fee... it might make it easier for you to join a scheme though

I worked as an electricians mate for 3 years installing kitchens and bathrooms also did quite a few full rewires. I took 16th edition wiring regs then and have since done 17th since re-joining the army. not sure about about the EAL bit but DEI domestic electrical installation incorperating part p. I work in comms at the moment, Fibre, data internal/external so hoping I can utilise my "on the tools skills".

I'm sorry, looking back on it my reply seems a bit short and rude, it wasn't meant to be.

Qualifications are so hit and miss at the moment its imposibble to tell whats what.

As I understand it the the only thing you need is to be COMPETANT.

Various quilifacations will help you to prove that, at the moment its C&G 2330, 2382, 2391 & 2356

However this is all going to change this year the new 2357 is going to be introuduced, this replaces most if not all of the above, however unless you are employed in the electrical industry you can't enroll on the new course because it is all employment based. Thats a bit of a kick in the teeth for people trying to retrain.

Rod,

I have found myself in a similar situation as yourself. I have completed 5 City and Guilds qualifications since end of Jan. I have now gone alone and am starting to win contracts. I am really encouraged and can recommend a first class training company who are not the most expensive on the market. Please private me and I am happy to share my experiences.
