Hi,

Ive just moved into a house(renting) and the landlord uses a garage at the bottom of the house as a workshop. Problem is, Ive been out to the back guarden and what appears to be the electic cable for the garage is running from the house down the side of the house to the garage.

Should this not be buried? Also is it likley to be metered in the garage or should I be asking questions in this area too?

IF it's steel wire armoured it's probably okay where it is, but if it's just ordinary twin and earth cable then no it's not.

The landlord has a duty to provide you a safe house to rent. If the garden has a dangerous cable, he's not fulfiling that obligation.

As to metering, well where do you think it's electricity comes from? the house you are renting and the meter you are paying for. so time to negotiate with the landlord about the electricity he uses. What clauses are there in the lease about the garage and it's use?

if the op knew what swa and twin and earth was do you think he would be asking if the cable should be buried or not LOL

Daren is obviously not a sparks so:-

1) If the cable is round, black,PVC and looks like it has a brass gland on the end in the garage , its probably SWA and is OK clipped to the fence , better buried but thats not always possible.

2) Almost certainly the power to the garage is coming from your meter . Why not try looking for a circuit breaker marked "Garage" , switch it off , wait for Landlord to raise the issue and claim some dough from him. Also check that its not a canabis farm , if you're in Birmingham it will be.

BLACK COUNTRY .....BLACK COUNTRY !!!!! YAM YAM COUNTRY ..... Birmingham is NOT in the Black Country .
Well bless my soul I think someone has touched a nerve slightly:innocent

Birmingham ..OK ..we talk a bit funny.

Black Country they talk REALLY funny.

In the Black Country every bit of grass bigger than a handkerchief will have a horse standing on it.

In the Black Country nobody suports Aston Villa or Birmingham City FC !!

In the Black Country they all hate Brummies.

The area of the Black Country are debatable but a rule of thumb is :-

West Brom

Tipton

Dudley

Walsall

Cradley Heath

Netherton

Kinswinford

Cannock

Brownhills

Bilston

Brierly Hill

Halesowen

Oldbury

Its tantamount to saying that Glasgow Celtic play at Ibrox, Man U home ground is Maine Road or Liverpool play at Goodison Park or Owen Glendower was an Englishman .
