I've just logged into Napit to do a notification and this caught my eye!

Call me cynical but if this is just to be used to collate data, whats the point of reporting it?

And more importantly why would we bother

:)

If you want to see dangerous work tackled, the data needs to be there to “prove” that it exists.
So my question is why would you not report it?

having a few reports of dodgy work isnt going to help the end result. for a start, since all they are doing is collecting data but no further investigation, i.e who done it? DIYer or 'electrician'. id expect if 90% of the dodgy work is DIYer, then any change of requirements / legislation would need to be different if it was an 'electrician' who done it

bad data can be worse than none

tbh, what we do need, is someone related to an MP etc to be killed by someone who's been assessed competant by the scams and done it so badly that someone died. maybe then something will be done about the current scams. but knowing the government, whatever other solution they come up with will probably be worse than what we have now, but at least someone will get paid for it...

I think people who don't provide certification are the minority and the provision of such documentation is no guarantee of compliant work.

I'm fed up with being one of the few sparks around who believes in providing certificates ........
I've had surprised looks and comments such as "What do I do with this ? The last guy never gave me anything".

It does make you wonder sometimes why you bother, especially with minor works certificates. As I think most of these end up in the bin.

There's at least one guy locally who "claims" not to have issued a certificate for 10 years, so totally get where your coming from.

A MP daughter did die which I thought started part p

That's what he was getting at,
And look what partP done,
Gave us all the 5 week wonders, suddenly all these training centres , that were meant to be about giving paper qualifications to sparks that had been doing it for years with no formal papers, realises they could sell these courses to anyone,.
So now George who has just lost his job shuffling papers on a desk all day has £5K redundancy to spend retraining as an electrician, sorry, electrical installer, and then all the CPS have a **** load more members paying to get on the gravy train too.
Everyone's a winner,
Except Joe Public getting shoddy work , and proper Sparks trying to compete with idiots.

Unless there is someone to police the problem and there is a greater awareness of BS7671 & building regs among the general public, then very little is likely to change. Especially with the increased cost of living problems, where many wanting work done, will just be looking for the cheapest solution, and either be ignorant or plead ignorance of any electrical regulations. When those with authority struggle to combat motoring offences such as untaxed and uninsured vehicles on the road, there is little hope to combat dodgy electrical work with no authority or resources to take action against offenders. While DIY electrical work is still permitted you are flogging a dead horse, as in the event of any accusations the DIY ticket is an easy 'get out' for both customers and dodgy electricians.

IMHO
partP of the building regulations is what started this shitshow in the first place ,

It was that PLUS.. the multiple registration bodies competing with each other for membership fees....
and varying entry requirements and assessment methods.....

It may have helped to have a single registration body with more rigorous entry requirement and one assessment method....
(Used to hear stories of people using new outdoor socket and a light fitting for assessment! W.T.F. !!!!!!!!!! )

Think I used a full rewire as one job and a CU change for the second job..?

Anything less than a CU change is a piss-poor assessment criteria in my opinion!

The original intention of Part P was for there to be a single registration body with no direct or indirect involvement to any other party however this was obviously far too difficult to achieve and hence we now have a rat race of incompetent people largely encouraged and endorsed by a previously respected body namely the NICEIC ripping out trade to pieces.

Seems to me, yet another example of highly paid civil servants delivering very little and confusing everyone. Meanwhile the skilled people have to put up with all the ******** they have to wade through.
We have a civil service manager living next door. He keeps telling me how well paid he is. I have never met a more inept muppet.:).
The country needs to have experienced people who have worked in industry in charge rather than those that have only worked in an institution that delivers 'yes' men and women.

Not so much civil servants as the general policy of outsourcing to quangos that has been in place since Thatcher in my opinion.

Think it was son in law putting up shelves and the cable ran diagonally along the wall. The previous house I had which had been rewired (pre part P) in replacing some wall lights I checked where cables ran with a detector and found that the cable to the fittings ran diagonally.

Totally agree I would like to know who made the decision to make E10 petrol I use 10% more so that, plus the CO2 footprint of making the bioethanol plus taking out farm land to produce the starch to make the stuff just does not make common sense.

Napit want everybody who wants to join to have higher levels quals - which on paper seems a reasonable idea but I suspect it will do precisely the opposite - so the numbers of un trained people doing installations is likely to rise considerably - and their membership numbers will fall, leaving the remaining members to pay more for the gravy train .......

roll on retirement

I'm sure what NAPIT are looking for is some stats that using non CPS electricians is more likely to result in a non compliant installation are they really that desparate
