FINALLY I SORTED IT! The N was nicked and touching earth. All done. I did all tests to confirm. Rcd continuity loop end to end and IR. NO MORE COWBOY. Lesson learnt. Thanks everyone. Was just that simple.

Is this thread 'new age' electricians, get the tools and use t'internet to resolve all problems, whilst telling customer that you are entering details on worksheet pda for office?

Somebody somwwhere has got to be reading this and do something about it. Why are trainees being expected to work unsupervised?what a sham we are in.

Well I blame my boss. I knew I would find it he just expects this kinda thing. I was never going to leave it unsafe and never leaving until it was resolved. So nothing was dangerous. However using the internet can't see nothing wrong with that. I never done that before. I told my boss get somebody here but he's totally useless and says crack on. Yes he expects me to know everything what can I do. End of the day I can't say much more nobody died.

do you have a copy of the GN3? Might be worthwhile having a read to gain better understanding of the testing process which will then inturn develop your understanding of fault finding.

No I don't have a copy. If not I will try get my 2391. I know the pass rate is low but for today I would like it!

Ok lesson learn't, you need to get your boos to train you better, and do lots of reading yourself. You could have left an earth out and installed a 20A MCB, not recommended as long term fix. However you have managed to find the actual fault - knicked cables on socket screws and back-box lugs is very common and always worth looking for.

I will point customers to this thread when they complain about my prices for correctly and safely finding and correcting faults.

There's a reason someone will always do it cheaper than someone who knows what they are doing.

What would the risk be if I had left one earth in? If everything was earthed? Could you plz explain the risk plz? Obviously it's sorted as I found the fault and corrected it but out of curiosity and just help understanding please. Thanks anyone?

my ring main earths are two radials is it unsafe? Or just not to regulations? My L go in a ring and also my N.

Can't quite figure out why this topic starts with a problem of a ring with broken earth continuity and ends up as an unable to reset RCD due to N-E short. Did you break the Earth yourself in an attempt to fix the RCD problem, or did you cause the RCD problem while trying to investigate the broken Earth.
