on the note of dimmers. can they from the strapper end? or only the feed end?
Either end. They just replace a 2 way switch so wire as normal and put the dimmer in place of a 2 way switch.

it makes no difference which end, wiring switches as per my picture there is no start or finish as such, just switches interconnected. you could have the feed at one switch and the switch live at the other switch.

cheers lurch, as said i've never put normal dimmers on 2way myself.

Why not what? Why doesn;t it matter which end? They're just 2 way switches, so can go on either end in place of any 2 way.

and what is the differance between 400w and 250w dimmer switches?
I was going to say I'll let you work that out as I'm sure it will come to you, but someone might tell me to not be so unhelpfull or something so the difference is, one is rated at 400W and the other at 250W.

if you want to be able to control the light level from either end this is possible, i fitted some dimmers 2way and intemediate in my own home and they aren't that dear really, the main dimmer was around

lol, be carefull now.

i thought i read somewhere that someone had a problem with a dimmer regarding this but only saw it in passing so did not get a good look at the problem.

so i guess 8 spots will need a 400w dimmer

i thought that this was a no no.ok i will look into this. so i need to get a set right? consisting of a main and slave.
No, steady on. If you get a standard dimmer you only use one and connect it to one end of the 2 way circuit. Bengie is on about some fancy electronic ones.

Standard dimmer <

if you want to control the light level from any point yeah, but you not worried about that then stick a normal switch and a normal dimmer as the 2 2way switches.

the rating of the dimmers depends on the lights being fitted mate, if your fitting 8 20w halogens then the 250w will be fine as the total load is only 160w, but if your fitting 50w lights then the 400w is theminimum what with the load being 400w. I'm not a fan of fitting dimmers at their rated load as they don't seem to have a super long life even with good quality dimmers, don't get me wrong thye might last years but being run at their limit means they are more likely to fail.

also don't forget dimmers have minimum loads too.
