Prodave,

Not quite the same as the non contact types though is it.

They are not in contact with the live conductor, they probably pick up the em field emitted.

Steps,NO, yes, no, yes oh I don't know!

Prodave,

Carbon resistors yes the predominant failure mode is to fail o/c.

As is the same with a neon.

HOWEVER, do you want to take the risk?

Remember very often when GLS lamps fail the ionisation in the envelope allows such a current to flow that it trips the mcb!
Read my post above again (I submitted it before completing it)

the MAIN use of my neon screwdriver is as a sanity check to alert me in case, despite my testing, I have overlooked something and am about to undo a live wire. Better to find out with the neon, than when I touch the live wire I've just removed.

I contest, used in this way, a neon makes my job safer.

Prodave,

OK, however, I operate live working procedures even when proven dead until I have disconnected the conductor and physically shorted it to a reliable earth.

Comes from working on stored energy supplies.

I always remove a known dead cable and short to a known earth.

isnt this how all electricians do it.?

the only time I have ever seen a neon screwdriver fail is when it is actually used as a screwdriver,

then you end up with minute hairline cracks in the insulation,

this is I think where they have got the bad reputation from.

I never actually use it in this manner,

but each to their own I suppose,.

maybe they should come with a point instead of blade?
