Hiya folks.

A mate asked me to have a look at the supply to his new house at the weekend. Opened the meter cupboard and found what looks like two DNO cables going to the same head.

There is a street light fairly close by so wondered if the DNO would have run a supply from their side of the main fuse to the street light or could it be a loop system where the DNO have linked the next property to their side of my mate's supply or is there something strange going on here.

Any ideas?

Thanks bigs.

that second cable look tiny compared to the other cable!

In that first picture is the neutral loads of single core cables or is it just me?
Erm, yes. It's a multistranded cable, surely you've seen these, 4mm and over is multistranded, as are conduit wiring cables. The exact cable type is a concentric to the left, and a split concentric to the right.

A mate of mine lived in a house where there was 2 heads. second one fed from the bottom of first one. BUT fed into top of second one. If next door neighbour made a lot of noise he got an unexpected power cut as his main fuse got pulled!

I'm trying to work this one out, my head won;t do it. (I'll come to the confusion how this means the pulling of power works if they lived in the same house anyway).

2 heads one incomer and the other one going to next door. For some reason the second head was fed from the unfused side of the first head but went into the top part of the second one, through the fuse and then the cable went into next door - the 2 houses used to be one and this was a quick fix to subdivide (I think)

Oh wait, I think I see what you mean now, the 2 heads were in property 1?

the cable on the right looks like the feed, and is split con giving a TNS supply. cable on left looks like straight con, giving the next house a TNCS (or TT) supply.

if the feed on the left is the main feed, and not the next house, then the next house may not have an earth!

They are both straight concentric cables
Care to explain? The one on the left could be either I suppose as you can;t see all the cores or any insulation on the outer cores, but I'd still put money on it being concentric. The one on the right is definitely split concentric, the cores are different sizes and you can see some have insulation, some don;t.

Yeah you could be right.

Especially now ive put me specs on ROTFWL

Not sure what the purpose of the earth is on the split con though.
