Get in the van this morning, start it up with no problems, de-ice it. All good with the world. Put it in to reverse, move about 2' and then it stalls. Or so I thought. Try to restart it and the engine has seized. Won't even turn over.

Quick change to missus car....

Look at the van this evening. Now it will turn over, but will not start. Whole heap of flashing warning lights.

I can normally diagnose most faults or at least have an idea what is wrong, but this one has me stumped.

Got a bad feeling it might be the end of the road for it.

Could do without this. Only just got back to work after 3 and a bit months of sick and money isnt exactly plentiful. Ho-hum...

 
I feel your pain too. I had a stabiliser bar for a grab lorry swing out and through my window last week when I was driving along. Covered in glass nearly a gonner :) then van passed mot yesterday and wont idle today ffs. Dont need it :(

I had a cam belt go on my Kangoo about 13 months ago and then the fuel pump go on its replacement about 2 months ago :(
I had to have the alternator replaced last week on it.... threatened it with the scrap yard if anything else broke on it.

Scary. I have some experience with that type of accident..... nothing you can but hope its painless... glad you came out the other side... :)

No breakdown cover ?  With nearly all vehicles even of that age a diagnostic box is plugged in to find whats wrong.
Had it towed to the garage earlier. Find out tomorrow what the box says. The fact that it ran, then seized so quickly confuses/worries me.

That sounds like the timing belt to me, You have had it replaced at the required interval haven't you?

 
I used to drive an 03 combo that was held together with cable ties and forever breaking down :( finally the timing chain went after a couple of days of really bad rattling it went bang turned over but lacked any compression :(

Combos have an obd2 port either near the ashtray or right knee pocket search eBay for Bluetooth obd scanner

When I first went self employed 28 years ago the first thing I did was by a new van, the reason being I did not want to lose any time with breakdowns etc and also I looked successful.

I bought the van on 3yrs HP which hurt the pocket a little, but I just worked longer hours to pay for it.

I've had a new vehicle every three years since, but I'm keeping the one I have now, now being 58 it's getting close to me taking a step back.

 
If the government gets their way no vehicles older than 2014  will be allowed in London after 2019 :angry:
Except my 41 year old Landrover is exempt from all that low emissions nonsense as a historic vehicle.

Not that I would be able to walk if I drove it the 600 miles from here to London, my teeth would be rattling for a week.

 
Not great news on the van front today. Garage are scratching their heads as well.

About 1/4 tank of fuel has gone between me starting it and it breaking down. It was only idling whilst it defrosted. Possible that the fuel system has got a fault. It may have dumped the fuel into the engine in one go. That could have seized the engine.

More investigations tomorrow. ?. :/

That sounds like the timing belt to me, You have had it replaced at the required interval haven't you?
Oil pump went last year. That drives the timing belt. All was replaced last year.

 
diesel in the oil will cause problems very quickly, but i cant think of any way 1/4 of a tank could suddenly end up in the sump. although it would be easy enough to find out, just pull the dipstick out and look at whats stuck to it

never heard of it, but I suppose it is possible,

cant see how though really unless its an electric pump and was still pumping when engine stopped and injectors open?!?!?

could that happen????????

Seems really unlikely doesn't it.

I cant think of a fault that would seize an engine. Then clear by leaving alone for a couple of hours.

There's still the other problem of a dash full of engine management lights on. Get to plug the van in tomorrow and see what error codes are logged.
