I'm trying to get into running but it's a slow process and very painful. People tell me it's worth it in the end but at the moment I'm not so sure.

Hi Ali,

have you tried using a training plan and do you keep a log?

Here is a link to Asics training log which might help you. My ASICS

Just remember to start off slowly and gradually, there is no need to keep up with everyone else or be embarrassed if you have to jog, walk, then jog etc.

the thing is to get your body used to running and not strain or hurt yourself otherwise you will ending up not running at all.

I am on the committee of a local snooker club but have not had time to play since December 2010, neither have I attended any committee meetings. As well as snooker I enjoy squash, tennis and going to the gym, however I am currently off work recovering from a slipped disc so I've been pretty inactive recently !. Hopefully back sparkying on Tuesday if the doc agrees tomorrow.

I must admit I'm a bit of a geeky one.... I mess around with electronics and microcontrollers.... well I will do when I've got the new home workshop fitted out :D , its been on the backburner a bit while that gets sorted. And computer programming, trying to teach myself visual basic.net.

Other than that, standard things like reading, listening to music (rock), lazying around the house or down the pub :p

Also quite enjoy woodwork and photography but i'm not that good at either lol

Thanks for that Robin, I'm doing lots of walking at the moment, and not so much of the running, but I'll get there in the end. I thought I'd go to the local park to run, but it turns out I'm too worried about being laughed at by other people so I've had to find a quieter spot where I only get laughed at by dog walkers.

I've got a shedule and I'm sticking to it by not reading the difficult weeks in advance!

Hope you dont mind me saying so, but you are probably being paranoid and think that people are laughing at you when they are not. They are probably thinking they should be making the same effort but are too lazy to do so!

But if you are worried then try and get a running partner, however just thinking of safety if you do run on your own then dont go anywhere too isolated..

for example I have recently changed my route and last week twice went through some woodland. the first time there were young lads with air rifles and the second time some even younger lads smoking jamaicas finest and cans of cider, so it can be a bit worrying as things might be unpredictable.

So I have now reverted back to my normal routes either road running or along a bridle track, which is used by dog walkers, runners or bikers and I ve never had any hassle.

In my spare time I play airsoft (like paintball but with BB guns) down my parent's field with a group of mates. Aside from that, sleep, bacon and tv also work quite well!

Well 2 years ago I would have said motorcycling.. (but that particular avenue of pleasure has been cut off) as they say. These days I enjoy going to the gym, running, surfing (rare these days esp as there is no swell in Blackpool - but I do o to North Devon a couple of times a year) cycling, playing my trumpet, to name a few activities.

nice to see the various hobbies that you guys have got.

I wanna get back into mine but sadly not this year, business is priority for 2011.

Like Robin says you are probably just being paranoid. There are thousands of people out there doing exactly what you are doing.

Have you thought about joining a running club? There will be loads of clubs where you are that cater for all abilities.

Everyone has to start somewhere, I did, I'm 52 now and I have competed for the Great Britain masters (veterans).

I'm a sprinter and run for Lincoln Wellington, they are primarily Track & Field but even they cater for all kinds.

I train 3 to 4 times a week and compete some weekends.

It's never too late to start.

I started running a few weeks back. the gym is a good place to build up endurance on treadmills. there is also sites like the C25K programme (couch to 5K in 9 weeks) which are goos. hey you deserve respect for trying. Its a hard thing to just get up and do. make sure you get well kitted out (proper shoes etc) and get a heart raete monitor (regretting that now - I ran the Stanley park circuit on saturday (3,5K 2.2M) in less than 20 mins but I know if I was using the HRM it would have been off the scale!

Fishing / shooting (when I get the chance) / ferreting (dont have my own now go with bro-in-law) / gardening........ but before all that its the wife & kids & what they want on a Sunday.
