I'd like to say that the timing of your update will be invaluable to another poster whom is experiencing a similar situation to yours, I hope that this poster sees you post and it gives them the courage to go boldly forward and take control. 

Thanks again for the update, just sorry you lost so much money in the process, however it is only money and can be replaced the peace that you brought to your life is priceless.

I hope they see it too. It's been a very stressful time for us but having had 2 further contractors look at his work we're glad we took the loss and sacked the first one. Just wish we'd done it sooner. For example (and please excuse my lack of technical knowledge) he "bonded" the boiler with "pig tails" which i understand is to protect you if a cable somehow gets worn beneath the floorboards and touches a central heating pipe. However he hadn't completed this fully and properly, so had this happened every radiator in the house would have become live with electricity! A scary thought, particularly with children at home!

The new contractor is going to compile a report of issues as he goes around replacing everything so we can submit to trading standards as C1 needs stopping before he literally kills someone!

As expensive a loss as it is (that we really can't afford), the welfare of the family comes above everything. I feel like writing off all the money we paid to C1 as a loss has just paid to save my family's life, and in that sense it's money well spent.

Once again thank you for the update, more often that not people come on with questions and problems and we never get any feedback about if or how they were finally resolved.  Is the first contractor a member of one of the electrical trade bodies such as NICEIC, ECA, NAPIT, STROMA, BSI?  If so they should have a complaints procedure on their website where you can complain about one of their members.

None of that is correct at all. There is no bonding required on the boiler pipes themselves, just (usually) a connection to the incoming gas/water service. The radiators would not all become live with a worn cable under the floor without this so contractors 2 & 3 are talking nonsense as well.

There are some sort of half truths in there but I cannot believe that 3 "electricians" have decided that you need to bond the pipes at the boiler, never mind the fact that 2 of them have said the radiators can become live if you didn't. We're back to bonding window frames and door handles again here.

I think what they meant was that contractor 1 had done half a job of bonding, so connected everything without actually earthing it. C2 and C3 don't know each other so id be surprised if they were both spinning me the same line. I think it's more likely my interpretation of what they told me that's incorrect.

Work is currently underway and new contractor is taking photos as he goes around to include in his report. C1 left us in a complete mess with bare live cables in numerous places, light switches hanging out of the wall with bare cables behind, and we have a child in the house!! Can't thank this forum enough for giving me the courage to call an end to his destruction of our home
