I discovered i lost out on a rewire today.

Unoccupied but laminate everywhere upstairs. 3 bed end terrace, 3 sockets per bedroom, 4 sockets lounge, 3 sockets dining, 8 sockets kitchen, cooker feed, spur + core through for extractor, extractor in bathroom, 3 smokes. standard pendant drops Bonding to other side of house. All sockets flush and chases plastered.

Client went with other quote ..................

£1500!!!!

Who does these jobs??

5DW's who dont have a clue, then come here to ask 'can i put more than 2 sockets per room?' or 'rather than take an earth all the way back, can i stick a rod next to the gas instead?' or 'how do you wire a 2 way switch?'

Wouldnt worry about it,  i had a customer other week wanted me to do similar for £1800 as they were told that was the correct price by a "mate in the know",  and they wanted chrome accesssories, no mess blah blah blah!!

Perhaps the £1500 was just a labour charge and these other guys might be getting materials free from somewhere?

You might as well work in Aldi instead of working hard doing a rewire for that price!

No first thing they will ask is how to lift laminate flooring in such a way that they can put it back again.

do they do a 5WW plastering course as well?

I recently did a rewire for a landlord.

He was quoted a similar price for a 5 bed and all to be done in a day!!!!!

They were a team that did council stuff. He didnt go with it, bought the materials off them and got me to do it for more then double the price.

These are the reasons why I will not touch domestic work!

in the past I have re-wired hundreds of houses, but not any more!

silly prices, carp job, "17 th edition boards" whatever they are?!?!?!

99p accessories etc etc etc.

i am now in the fortunate position that I don't have to do the carp poor paying jobs just to pay the mortgage and turn the money over, but I appreciate that many have to and are struggling to make ends meet.

there are cowboys in every job, just that our trade seems to attract more than its fair share!

Can u ask to go and see it once its all done?

Give the property owner your card..........bet you'll have some remedials to do.

I'm getting under cut regular as clock work at the moment, there are now 3 new general domestic maintenance/odd job/jack of all master of **** all trades persons up my road & one of the twats is doing jobs for what must be a loss.

Usual story made redundant spent savings/redundancy on a shiney van & a shed full of B&Q / screwfix cheap as chips tools, a quick teach you sod all 5 week course & your away to under cut  every other tradesman because you know diddly about running a business.

The galling thing about it is i have rewired 2 properties for the guy and wired his elderly dads extension in the past, all with a healthy bonus at the end.

The thing with this one is its his young sons `project`.

No doubt he`s got a mate that that will do a foreigner and nick the kit from his employer.

Oh well.

Priced a job in 2011 for 46k, had a phone call saying the other price is half yours.

On checking my price buildup the job had 24k of materials, so there was no chance they could do it. I told the builder to go with them.

A week later he phoned and said they wanted 50% up front, we both agreed if that happened they would either say they needed more money as they had underpriced or they would go bust straight after receiving payment.

We did the job and it finished at 52k, so the other outfit had no chance at 23k.

Finding this more and lately.

Ive herd stories in my area of £800 3 bed house rewires apparently they guy floods it with labour and is doing about three a week ! An elederly client was quite proud of the fact the lads doing the council rewires on the estate did his house in two weekends for £750 ! It looked a bloody mess they had sunk plastic surface boxes into the walls and trunking all over the show, i very much doubt it was all rewired.

It annoys me these guys are working for an employer and stealing the materials and undercutting

I just priced up an extension for 21k after working on the other part of the house

a

builder quoted 10k for the electrics not realising it needs 2 cu's once the old one has been relocated while the garage gets demolished

quoted 4k for 2 flat conversions

3k for an extension and cu move

both those jobs I have without other quotes

not a bad reputation for a 5ww !!!!!!!!

Council re-wires - complete lash ups with everything surface in trunking. The teams that do this work are well practised and can do a surface lash-up in a couple of days / day.

I did a couple of days lash up for the council before I got kicked off !!!!

I just felt so sorry for the tenants
