I was talking to a British Gas electrician at a job the other day (he was doing a vehicle charging point whilst I was doing outside lights) and he reckons that British Gas now exclusively use Proteus boards as they have upped their game and I assume there is a discount for British Gas.

He showed me the boards - and they looked OK - high enough for RCBO's and easy breakouts - top slides out for easy access - didn't like the front fastening though.

I've always loathed Proteus stuff - cheap, tacky and supplied by City! Has anyone tried the new stuff? Is it worth a try?

Anything to do with them I avoid, been overcharged to many times.
Ha funny that Steve most sparks I know all refuse to use garbage electrical factors due to high prices and carp gear

Wonder there still in business

My old supervisor would alway insist on using City Electrical even when other wholesalers had the gear in stock and where a lot closer, guess he was on a good thing with them

I went into CEF in Altrincham. They had twin and earth on offer. I could not buy it at the offer price as my account was at a different branch. They phoned my branch and they would only let me buy it at a higher price! So I bought it for cash, got home, called in at my local branch. Saw the manager and told him he was lower than an MPs conscience and closed my account. If I am that desperate I will call in and pay cash. I have ignored every phone call that they have made to me since!

The one thing that puts me off Proteus is the wholesaler that sells it.

About the ONLY time I do go there and bu Proteus mcb's, is when I'm desperate for one to fit the VERY old Wylex boards, you know the lethal ones with the exposed terminals, and Proteus still sell old ones that fit.

The one in Trafford park isnt too bad got a good price on a set of large crimpers before xmas from them and service was good too. The Chester branch is touch and go in my experience depends who is serving at the time and the Northwich branch should be called sorry mate we dont stock them anymore ! LOL

And Widnes well i only go if i have to

Finally had it with City's went in today with a fitting i needed to replace all i got was "we aint got anything like that" then the little oik walked off....so i drove round the corner to Neweys and the guy found out who made the fitting(all it had was a model number) and could have one for me by 12pm the next day. I know which wholesaler will get my business now.

lamo at sh***y electrical,

I get stuck and have to use them sometimes as they are right in the middle of my area, another wholesaler said there were getting stick on their forums because they all drive Audi's :)

When I am there the carpark is always full of housing association & maintenance company vans. hmmmm???

Always try to use my local wholesaler who is al least a third cheaper than cef and is more knowledgeable about the stuff he sells.

As for proteus, pah! Never used the stuff... mk & wylex for my customers.

edit had to manually filter shitty...

Done a job the other day in a garden centre. The db wss s MCG. Apparently only available at cef what a load of garbage. Been in the trade quite a while and by far the worst board i have ever worked on! On the subject of proteus i worked for a company that always installed proteus panel boards with a built in db. In 3 months 2 sparks crossed phases whilst trying to install the breakers. In my opinion they were dangerous!

Is Proteus crap? - Yes

Is it worse than Sector or Newlec? - No

Are some CEF branches crap? - Yes

Are some Senate/Neweys/Edmundson branches crap? - Yes

Are some electricians crap? - Yes

It's down to people I think.

CEF is for emergency use only, although they are one position higher than rexel senate...

that and ive heard most of the staff in the local CEF have jumped ship and gone elsewhere. never been for a long time so dont know about 'most of the staff', but i have been contacted by them wanting me to use where they are at now. erm, ill stick to those who i use now, at least they dont screw up on everything
