Previously it was ok if the smokie didnt have its own dedicated circuit to be able to double up with a general use lighting circuit in existing properties, but all new builds had the circuit as a dedicated only. Can somebody advise me on the change for 17th ed, does all smoke alarm installations(new or existing) now require their own dedicated circuit?

Need to know as i have potentially a few installs in existing properties looming.

Cheers!

I read somewhere, that if (for 17th ed) you have smokes connected to a lighting circuit, then this is illegal? due to the fact that you would normally have socket outlets in the same bank RCD, therefore a smokes circuit should be run in a high intergrity borad protected by RCBO. I could be incorrect though.

Can't see what problem with that would be unless you fit smoke alarms without battery back up which I think should be banned anyway.

if their is a fault on the sockets/lights (which also effects the smoke), most people dont waste much time in getting it fixed....

if it was only the smoke circuit that had the fault, they probably wouldnt even know until smoke started beeping. and then think there faulty and remove backup battery....
