Part M of Building Regs seems to imply that CU's (with RCD fitted) in new installations should be between 450 and 1200 mm from ground. Whilst re-wiring a house, with mains at ceiling level, how do you run 25mm meter tails down to CU? Do you fit an interim switched fuse to ensure meter tails are no more than 50cm long?

You put the CU at a sensible height under the circumstances and Building Control can swivel on it!

Room is 2300mm high, meter is 2000mm from floor, so tails will have to drop at least 800mm.

Building regs are not retrospective and therefore this isn't an issue with a re-wire?

Or am I missing something?

No, your not. Building regulations only apply to new builds.

If the CU was in a new extension then Building Regs would apply.

I was also told that Building Regs are not retrospective, but BC said if house is being renovated (which it is) then new installation should comply - or am I being fed a line here?

As far as I'm aware new builds.

As for LABC, I'll send my boys round.

Hiya, you dont need to isolate/protect tails if less than 3m from the meter. dave

Fed a line :)

Don't overcomplicate :D

Thanks to all - guess that means CU stays where it is and I will argue the toss with BC.

Evening all

I was also under the impression that on a new build 450/ 1200, ( fancy banging your knee on the CU ). However with a rewire as cut out is already in a position its not as easy to place it in an accessible position. Im' doing a rewire at the moment and the cutout is above the front door where the old board was. If i were to bring it down to say 1200 high it would be in a ( what i would consider a possibly dangerous area) as if the door was to fly open in a gust of wind, it would probably go straight through the CU front cover.

I have just tried to access a part M document through a portal of sorts and its under maintainance, so if there are any more comments on this subject, i would be very interested to hear them.
