I went to quote for a rewire today and the client asked if I could use some reels of cable they had. I had a look and it was Tower branded 2.5mm T&E new reels but in old colours. Apart from suggesting they flog it on ebay can it be used if I make sure I sleeve it in brown and blue?

Use it mate, as long as you sleave it.

No different from using 3 core and marking up the grey as a neutral.

Ok so thats two different opinions. I don't see it as being any different to sleeving 3 core but I will check what my scheme provider Elecsa says about it.

New colour, Basec approved = confidence in materials to last as expected once installed.

Thats the only real difference in using old colours, as we can not assertain how old they are and life expectancy can not be judged from installation date but from manufacture date. Old colours by definition can not be Basec approved, thats a point to consider.

Yes you could sleeve the conductors, however I never do this when I do any addition to an installation, the label on the CU does that for me. One of the reasons for the old colours still being touted is for those who will do any job and use the fact that because it is in old colours then its not subject to Part P.

Personally? I would never use it, and for those who say its the same as using three core and sleeving? Not seen any new red, yellow and blue 3 core cable lately.

Can you quote the "Law" it breaks
Its not a law philbas, you posted before my reply, but no old colour cable will carry a basec approval.

dont use it,

not unless you want to deviate from BS7671 that is,

AFAIAA ALL installations have to use harmonised colours in order to comply with the regs,

I could be wrong though, I never read the regs,  ;)

for it to be illegal is must contravene an act of parliament, as has been proved in court BS7671 is just a guide, the   term illegal gets   used to much  in the wrong context.

Not seen any new red, yellow and blue 3 core cable lately.
havent seen any red white and blue for a while either,  :D

hmmmm,

who actually said it was illegal?

it was suggested to tell the customer it was illegal,

that is totally different.

Find a reg against it and it becomes a no no, but if there aren't any then, its a yes.

Dave is from Scotland and when its cold they use whiskey to keep warm, however he did follow his comment with a smiley that denotes to me the statement was in jest.
