Nobody can take anything away from you, I think you got the worng end of the stick. An engineer is a totally different thing and degrees or above are not part of this conversation. I am talking about a basic electrician who is working on site not an engineer in design etc, completely different. I too hold degrees and masters degrees and a time served Indentured apprenticeship, I'm still qualified. I have worked in training for 11 years so am reasonably expert in my field. The time served Indentured apprenticeship is what you would call the NVQ today, your proof of vocational competence. What I was trying to put across is that there are plenty of people out there who have attended college on a full time basis and got a tech cert only and no time on site with no proof of vocational competence (NVQ or Indentured apprenticeship). Also if you have been working for years with just a tech cert and no NVQ or Indentured apprenticeship, you can't call yourself a fully qualified electrician until you have proved your vocational competence formally. Just try and get a JIB card or Immigrate without it, they will say you are not qualified.

So bottom line no previous training has been made invalid, just that some people will now need to add to it if they didn't serve an apprenticeship or complete an NVQ.

Hope this makes it a little clearer

As far as I am aware an NVQ is not a requirement to drive but a requirement to be a qualified electrician

Couldnt help having a laugh at this.

I havent got an NVQ to my name but I do have

4 year apprenticeship

EITB J2 and J22

BTEC ONC

C&G Pt 1

C&G electrical specialism

C&G 2391 and the easy one

C&G 2393

C&G 2382

oh and an Honours Degree

but no NVQs

really worried now

what AM I to do?

scrambled eggs all over my face

Read the previous post, your 4 year EITB apprenticeship is your proof of vocational competence, what the NVQ is now, oh and an honours degree is nothing to do with being a qualified electrician. Do you want some bread with that scrambled egg?

Hmm eggy bread?...

You know what I had this for the first time yesterday, very disappointed!

NVQ Expert,

You may have experienced a bit of a backlash in the first responses to your post, we have had a few new members around here recently who have had very outspoken views on qualifications, and have then proceeded to cause disruption and be abusive, I for one took your very short abstract first post to be another of these.

Apologies.

I hope you can understand why I thought it a bit "odd"?

It is essential to prove competence, I am not sure that the NVQ is an adequate method to be honest, they are prone to abuse, and yes I have seen this.

When they came out I was quite supportive, to the extent of providing guidance on early drafts for the authoring body, to be honest I can't remember which ones they were now!

Another issue is the way training providers are "awarded" on passes regardless of the training they provide.

Until or unless the "NVQ" assessment system is ratified and "de-loopholed" (probably not a real word, but ho-hum;) ; I will continue to stand by my previous comments.

I would appear to be in the minority here, because.........wait for it........I do, indeed hold an "NVQ" qualification (for all the worth it has :slap ) (but don`t tell everyone - they`ll laugh at me again).

In comparison the CG236, or 2391; its as much of a joke as the 2392. "Dumbed down" doesn`t begin to cover it.

We have members of this forum who have personal and first-hand experience of people passing others` work off as their own, to get accredited on their NVQ - how that proves any sort of competence is beyond me!!!!!

N. V. Q. = Not a Valid Qualification IMO

And that`s all I have to say about that.

KME

And maybe I seem a bit confused,

Yeah maybe, but I got you pegged!

Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha!

But I don't know what to do with those tossed salads and scrambled eggs.

They're callin' again.

KME, I actually also hold an NVQ which is why I also feel that they are a little "below par" shall we say!
I know you have........

Thats why you were copying me the other day, when trying to work out which wires went where in that fused spur..............S`okay - I signed your sheet as "competent in connection of accessories" :slap

Ahh, that explains why you were watching me pouring that beer the other day.

I could never have signed your sheet at the end of THAT night! ;)

gadzooks,

what have I been doing all these years,

Im gonna go to prison by the looks of it....

I dont have an NVQ,

or JIB,

funnily enough NICEIC recognise me as being a competent qualified person, enough so in fact to be a qualified supervisor,

and all those countries that I have lived and worked in,

Im in doodah now for fraud,

kiwi secret service and half of europe and interpol will have warrants out for my arrest before nightfall by the looks of things......

headbang

And this is new??

I thought I saw a picture of you and hercules on the most wanted list for rodding people who didn't understand earthing systems.

As for qualification's, I have a bronze swimming certificate (as well as a few others, but I feel that the most important) and no intention to do the NVQ.

and Napit seem happy enough to sign me up with what I have so I'm fine with that.
