I am trying to refurbish an alloy wheel on my X Type. Don't know if anyone here has any advice. I found a thread on a jag forum with some good advice which I followed. Trouble is it looks great with the aluminium paint on but as soon as you spray it with clear laquer it goes a dull grey colour. I have tried 3 different laquers and its still the same. Also even after leaving the wheel out in the sun for a day, the finish although looking good apart from being the wrong colour doesnt feel very durable, you can scratch it with a fingernail so wouldnt last long on a car!

Get a Volvo (just kidding) :D
I'm far to young to sit in the outside lane all day long with my hadlights on expecting everyone to get out of my way.... (only kidding)

Volvo same as Jag in that they were owned by Ford, only now Volvo is Chinese owned and Jaguar/LR is Indian owned.

Powder coating? how am I going to do that at home? I could try talcum powder I suppose?

Wolverhampton a bit far for me, done a search for sensible priced rfurbs in North wales and not found anyI guess I need to find the exact colour somehow and as you say get a 2 pack (and someone to spray em)

I have a spare (the one I triecd to fix) and I could put the skinny spare on for a few days which means I could get 2 done.

What I did is to clean the wheel thoroughly, sand down the worst kerbing and scrapes and fill with chemical metal - then sanding back with various grades of paper until smooth. then etch primer, then normal grey primer, then aluminium paint (they looked great with the ally paint) it all went wrong with the laquer.
Did you spray the laquer on while the paint was takie

Did you flatten the paint before lacquering? The shiny finish you get from the paint will turn dull once lacquered. Dull it down first, apply the lacquer then once the lacquers fully dry use a cutting compound to cut the surface to a shine.

I shall try that with some very fine grit wet and dry. Thanks for the tip!

I always use 1500 wet and dry with plenty of water. Always worrying when you first do it as it looks like you're taking to much paint off but it does make a big difference once its lacquered.

after you spray the grey let it dry really really well, and use some panel wipe to clean it(isoproprol alcohol would probably do), if its not dry it will wipe off!

if you are using rattle can laquer shake it for a good 10 mins and make sure it is warm,

to get a good shine you need to lay it on really thick, as thick as you can without any runs, can be very tricky, and it needs to be HOT to get a really good shine.
